Yesterday we were getting ready to put the siding on the back of the garage and my sons heard a bat. We finally found it tucked back behind the vapor barrier. In order to not kill the bat, it we cut the vapor barrier and extracted it. Here are some pictures . It is a Little Brown Bat, the most common bat in North America.

Ringneck Snake

Posted by Tom Willett Fri, 22 Sep 2006 13:24:00 GMT

Today I encounterned a little Northern Ringneck Snake. It was in the rocks in front of my garage. The pictures here are of it on the garage floor.

They are fairly uncommon around this area, even though I have seen several on my property. I found s everal in a pile of rocks I was moving. The one I encounterd here is rather small about 10 inches long. The get up to 15 inches lo ng. It is a rather beneficial snake that eats insect larvae, salamanders, earthworms and frogs.

Geodes

One of the prominent features of my land is the presence of geodes. They are everywhere. Whenever you dig a hole you run into geodes. In the spring, when you start mowing again you have to watch out for geodes that surface during the winter during the freeze/thaw cycle.

They range in size from pebble size to as big as my head. Some have blue and or red crystals; some are only white. Some have cavities some don’t. Here are two pictures of some geodes.

I am embarking on a project of recording the woods outside my office by taking a picture a day of the wildlife, flora, or fauna and posting it here.

Today I found some interesting mushrooms and took pictures of them. Not being a naturalist, this is only a guess but I think they are of the Ramaria genus, specifically Ramaria Stricta.
