Sgt. Adam Estep dreamed of starting a family with his new bride, graduating from college, and becoming a professional artist. A 23-year-old tank driver, he was supposed to come home on April 12. Instead, his tour was extended.

A military chaplain informed Estep's relatives Thursday night that the San Jose native died in a rocket-propelled grenade attack outside Baghdad.

"This is a parent's worst fear," said his father, Ken Estep. "I'll be in shock until the body returns. You just don't want to believe it."

At least 126 Americans and 1,300 Iraqis have died in Iraq combat in April. At least 737 U.S. troops have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003.

Adam Estep, who was active in ROTC in high school in San Jose, joined the Army in 2000 and drove tanks for the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment and 1st Cavalry Division. On Tuesday, he told his father the Army had issued him a Humvee and commanded him to lead convoys in Iraq.

He had been stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and served a six-month tour in Kuwait. In December, the Army extended his commitment for 14 months. He left for Iraq in March.

His wife of two months, Demara Estep, said her husband longed to attend college and start a family. He lined his letters with sophisticated sketches.

"He wanted to be a dad," said a tearful Demara Estep, who attends college at University of California, Santa Barbara. "He knew that it was possible something could happen and he told me if it did, move on. But he's just not somebody you can move on from."

I started my life with Adam. We were in kindergarden together and went to the same schools all the way through high school. Adam was always so nice to everyone. I can't believe he is gone. But his memory will live on and on... There are just no words.... but I will remember you Adam.

Much Love to your family,

I served with Adam in A Co 2-5 CAV from 2000 to 2002. He was my soldier. He became my friend. He was one of the most enjoyable people to be around and I cannot think of a time that he wasn't smiling, immatating Spider-man, or asking for ideas of what to draw next. I will miss him. To his wife, he couldn't wait to tell me all about you when I came off of recruiting duty. To his family, he talked about you often. I am sorry for your loss. Adam was a special young man.

I did not know Adam well. Most of what I learned about him was the stories my wife told me about growing up with him. The thoughts and prayers of myself anf my platoon-mates go out to his family. It's hard to explain how it makes us feel without sounding crass (Marines have a hard time with that some times), but knowing that he fought for his country and unfortunately died for it drives us harder every single day so that we can finish what we have started. That way no other families have to go through this terrible loss. Again, my thoughts are with you, please know you have support where ever you need it.

Okay I've been hovering for a few days trying to think of what to say. I grew up with Adam. Literally... we've known each other since birth. We played together, went to school together and survived our crazy but loveable families together. He was a big part of my life and I will miss him. My heart goes out to his family and friends in this time because I know the heartache of his loss. My prayers and blessings go with you all.

Adam Wayne Estep was my family's 'other son'--he called me "Mom" and my husband "Dad", as well as calling my parents "Grandma and Grandad". We feel as though we have lost one of our own children.

I cannot believe that we will not see him bouncing through the front door with that smile that would light up a whole house. He was such a goof. How can it be that such a sweet and sensative man be gone so suddenly?

We have dedicated a small memorial in the front of our house to him. Our sadness is deep. His untimely loss is hard to fathom and harder to take or understand. May my God keep your family's loved ones safe from harm and danger.

Adam was growing into a interesting young man. Our hearts and prayer still go out to Demara, Ken, Ann and Adam's large and extended family and friends. Adam will always be remembered by us....especially with that big ol' goofy smile of his!
Love you a bunch Adam -- love "your other Mom", Jana Wright
