Sergeant Dylan Lee Todacheene

Individuals USNavajo Nation -- Window Rock?Navajo Nation Vice President Frank Dayish, Jr. and wife Virginia Dayish lost their nephew U.S. Army Sergeant Dylan Lee Todacheene, 29, Lukachukai, Arizona on Monday night serving in the Iraq War. Sergeant Todacheene, an Army medic, was killed in Iraq on active duty. He was from the Army?s First Infantry Division Task Force 1-77 AR LSA Anaconda Medic Unit.

Rydell Todacheene, 23, Sergeant Todacheene?s younger brother said, ?My brother?s wife called us about 9:30 last night (Tuesday) to deliver the news, Jacqueline couldn?t speak so the captain got on the phone and told us what happened. They told us my brother was killed in action on duty, it was a surprise attack and he was killed instantly. We?re waiting for more information.?

Sergeant Todacheene?s parents are Melvin and Alberta Todacheene of Arizona, and he is survived by one brother and one sister. Melvin is the older brother of Virginia Dayish.

He was married to his wife Jacqueline for 10 years and they have two young sons, Cody Lane, 9, and Dylan Lee, 8. The family resides in Schweinfurt, Germany where they have been stationed for the past two years.

In Oklahoma City at time he was alerted by the family, Vice President Dayish said, ?We are completely devastated by the news. Our prayers are with his family in Germany. My wife is with her family now while I return from my business trip Thursday. We are working with our Navajo Nation Veteran?s office to honor Sergeant Todacheene.?

Todacheene said, ?Right now everyone?s grieving. We have many family members coming from several different states to gather around us. There were so many great qualities about my brother. He was proud to be in the U.S. Army and a medic, he was proud to be a Navajo. He believed he was doing some good in Iraq when everyone thought it was wrong. He was a quiet man, he was a strong man, a gentleman, he respected himself and everybody, he was generous and kind, and he loved his family above everything else.?

Upon hearing the news Wednesday afternoon, President Joe Shirley, Jr. stated, ?Our hearts go out to the wife of Sergeant Todacheene and his two young sons. The Todacheene and Dayish families will be in our constant prayers. The Navajo Nation is ready to help in anyway we can.?

Family members say unofficial reports state that the attack was near Baghdad, Iraq. At this time the Navajo Nation is waiting for official word from U.S. Army officials.

Both Lee Duane and Jacqueline graduated from Navajo Missions Academy in Farmington, New Mexico. Sergeant Todacheene was a grandson of Raymond Nakai who was Chairman of the Navajo Nation from 1963-1970.

I served with Sgt Todacheene down range he was in my unit and i was honored to hold the national colors at his memorial ceremony in iraq. He was a great soldier and always looked to boost the morale of other soldiers that were feeling homesick. As a medic he patched us up at made us whole again and let us to continue the fight that we were sent out to do. Sgt Todacheene was a great man and will be truly missed. When we die we remain alive in the memories of the people that we leave behind. And for the 1-77 armor soldiers he will always be alive. Sgt Todacheene thanks for everything you truly were a great soldier. Steel Tigers Blood on the Axe
